Tower Crane Articles - The Real History of Thanksgiving

Most visitors believe that the first Thanksgiving feast ever was shared involving the Native Americans of North America and then the English colonists, as a gracious symbol of cooperation. Not quite so as the real history would reveal. While it was peaceful and showing gratitude for their blessings, history is quite different, than what we normal hear about our Thanksgiving holiday.

While the story on the first Thanksgiving is technically true, this was a tradition celebration held for centuries by the Native Americans. They had a long tradition of celebrating and giving thanks for the bountiful year. Many within the Native Tribes throughout the country celebrated this way. While in the fall, they would gather and share, organizing dances and other festivities in celebration of a fruitful year, long earlier than the arrival of any colonists in North America.

One in the main misconceptions surrounding the first Thanksgiving was the menu. Turkey was highly likely on the menu, not as a main dish, but along with other wild birds such as goose, duck, swan, eagles, and crane. The menu at the first Thanksgiving was definitely, really different, than the meals we serve today. Our potatoes and sweet potatoes dishes have been not common, so no mashed potatoes and sweet potato pie. It is unlikely they had cranberry sauce, even though the colonists had cranberries, considering they had no sugar, no sweet sauces that we take for granted. There also would not had pumpkin pie, or any on the fancy milk products.

The meal probably consist mainly of two items, venison and wild fowl. These ended up the two staples on the time. We know this as fact mainly because they can be the only two foods mentioned in primary research sources from the era.

Modern Thanksgiving is really a time of real fest. The meals include multiple meat dishes, various vegetable dishes, and many different desserts. The modern meal is usually built around a single or two main meat courses with various toppings and gravies that add to our waist line.

The colonists' meals consisted for the many different meats to choose from, such as eel, lobster, seal, venison, duck, crane, eagle, swan, cod and clams, just to name a few. Inside the seventeenth century, vegetables were relatively scarce. Most Native Americans have been hunters with quite little farming.

It doesn't issue if you are sitting down to a modern day Thanksgiving meal with your family, or friends and reminiscing on the celebrations of times past, the real cause within the season holds steadfast: it is to express gratitude and thanks for all of our many blessings for a different year.
